Theatre : Plays by Margaret Rose

Margaret Rose has written about Italian migration to the UK in several stage plays and a radio play:

  • Six Months Here Six Months There co-authored with Emanuela Rossini (Gilmour Centre and Gateway Theatre, 2000).
  • Mary e le altre (Teatro comunale in Trento and as a radio play for the Italian Rai, 2002 and 2007), co-authored with Emanuela Rossini.
  • Walking Through Stones (Gateway Theatre and Edinburgh Festival, 2003) co-authored with Wilma Stark and Carlo Jacucci.
  • Neither Here Nor There (Soho Theatre and Italian Cultural Institute, 2008) co-authored with Emanuela Rossini and dramatised by Lara Parmiani.
  • Shattered Head, from an original idea by M. Rose, written by Graham Eatough and dramatised by M. Rose (Oran Mor, Glasgow and Traverse, Edinburgh, 2009).

These plays reached a large audience in the Italian community in Britain and a more general audience in Britain and Italy.

She has also explored the theme of Italian migration to Scotland by organising festival symposiums and leading theatre workshops funded and supported by universities, cultural institutes, the Arts Council and theatres. In 2000 she co-organised a Festival Symposium, “Italian-Scottish Connections and Identities”, including a broad-spectrum arts programme and a European Symposium. The proceedings are published by the Italian Cultural Institute in Edinburgh.

In 2001 “The Eduardo Paolozzi Project” at QMUC in Edinburgh was devoted to this major Italian-Scots sculptor. In 2006 the theatre workshop “Stations”, exploring hybrid identities, through the metaphor of a train journey across Europe, invited four writers to embark on an actual train journey as part of their research. This site specific project was supported by the Arches Theatre in Glasgow and the National Theatre of Scotland.

Critical works include: A Theatre that Matters (a collection of essays, some of which examine Italian Scottish theatre), co-edited with Valentina Poggi and with Rose’s introduction, and the Italian anthology, with Rose’s introduction, Caledonia Dreaming, co-edited with Cristina Cavecchi and Sara Soncini. This last volume includes the Italian translation of Tallies Blood by the Italian-Scots playwright Anne-Marie di Mambro. These two works have been on syllabuses in some Italian universities.
